Innovation
From creating Cradle to Cradle products that can be recycled back into themselves again and again at the end of their useful lives or using alternative fuels like yellow grease, to monitoring our transportation miles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, our Green Edge Initiatives show our commitment to Sustainability™ Through Innovation in action.

MBDC

INITIATIVE | 031 At Shaw, we're partnering with the best people in the world to bring you the safest, most innovative product solutions for the planet. With the help of MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry) we're designing our products from the inside out.

MBDC is a world-renowned product and process design consultancy dedicated to the total transformation of the manufacturing process as we know it. Founded in 1995 by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, MBDC continues to promote intelligent design as the empowering agent for a Next Industrial Revolution. In place of the old take>make>waste manufacturing model, MBDC employs Cradle to Cradle design methods and principles to create products and systems that make economic sense, are socially responsible, and contribute to the prosperity of the planet.

Shaw Industries, Inc. has worked with MBDC from July 2002 to the present on two breakthrough product solutions: Eco Solution Q ® fiber and EcoWorx™ backing system. By analyzing our supply chain and all material components down to 100ppm (parts per million), and by making chemical and material substitutions to our formulations based on MBDC assessment results, we've been able to ensure that Eco Solution Q and EcoWorx are safe and healthy for humans and the environment. And our work doesnt stop there. MBDC is currently verifying Shaws claims regarding the amount of recycled content used in our products.

MBDCs ideas about Cradle to Cradle design are among the most exciting and promising in redefining manufacturings role on this planet. By designing products as technical nutrients that can be recycled back into the production process, we save resources and eliminate waste. That's how it works in nature, and that's what MBDC and Shaw are working towards. With product solutions like Eco Solution Q and EcoWorx, we're closing the loop with our Green Edge.
