INITIATIVE | 082 At Shaw, we're always looking into ways to do more – using less of the planet's reserves. We have a long list of initiatives that are short on resource usage and high on efficiency.
In the fall of 2003, Shaw Hard Surface Distribution initiated a new pallet recycling program. Pallets are the portable wood platforms on which we place our products for storage and transport. Used pallets from the Distribution Center and from Hard Surface Manufacturing are collected, inspected, repaired if necessary, and sent back for reuse. There's no need to discard a perfectly good pallet!
In 2006, 65,765 pallets were refurbished and reused. At an average weight of 35 lbs., that amounts to 2.3 million lbs. of virgin wood. That's a Green Edge solution that saves 1,385 trees a year – an entire forest of great results!
