INITIATIVE | 061 The health of our employees is at the heart of our practice. Every Shaw associate is entitled to a safe and clean work environment, and that includes the air we share.
Shaw has recognized that tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smoking causes 87% of lung cancer deaths. Furthermore, secondhand smoke is responsible for an estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmokers each year. Smoking cessation has major and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages. Quitting smoking decreases the risk of lung and other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease as noted in QuitSmokingSupport.com website.
In an effort to promote wellness at work, Shaw implemented its tobacco-free guidelines. Since March 2005, all Shaw facilities, properties and company owned vehicles have been smoke-free. This policy benefits all Shaw employees, vendors and visitors. It's a Green Edge that helps us all breath easier.
