Shaw Facilities Earn California Waste Reduction Awards for 6th Straight Year
01.11.2011
Dalton, Ga. – January 11, 2011 – Shaw Industries has been recognized for the sixth consecutive year by the CalRecycle Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP).
Four Shaw manufacturing facilities in California area were recognized with the award. Combined, the facilities diverted approximately 8 million pounds of waste from landfills during 2009, saving more than $1 million in landfill, waste reduction and reuse costs in the process.
Designed to recognize the leadership of businesses and organizations with highly successful waste-to-landfill reduction initiatives, the WRAP awards and CalRecycle are part of the California Environmental Protection Agency.
According to CalRecycle representative Edward Reidhead, "By incorporating waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and buying recycled into your daily business activities, your business is helping to conserve scarce resources, and influence the way business is done in California." Reidhead noted that this year's WRAP winners collectively reported diverting over 2 million tons of waste from landfills, and more than $190 million in cost savings.
"We don't take for granted receiving our 6th consecutive award," said Jim Cusick, director of manufacturing for Tuftex. "Our commitment to continued sustainability and to helping lead environmental and social responsibility initiatives for our community is a fundamental part of the way we do business."
Bill Woyshner, Tuftex environmental and risk manager, said, "It's an achievement and demonstration of our commitment to receive WRAP recognition for the sixth year in a row. We're also proud of the fact that one of our WRAP facilities, Plant WG, has also been nominated for Facility of the Year by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA)." Woyshner is a member of California's LA County Sanitation District's Industry Advisory Council, a group charged with bridging the gap between regulatory agencies and the business community through a focus on sustainability, green chemistry, and best practices.
