About Shaw :  company overview
Our story is the story of our customers - and of our commitment to providing them with the products they need: products that are innovative, sustainable, have value and are competitively priced. That was our commitment 63 years ago, when we began as Star Dye Company, a small business in Dalton, Georgia that dyed tufted scatter rugs. And it's still our commitment today.

U.S. General Services Administration Honors Shaw with 2010 Evergreen Award
Shaw recognized for environmental leadership in government segment

03.16.2011

Dalton, Ga. – March 16, 2011 – The General Services Administration (GSA) recently honored Shaw Industries Group, Inc. with its 2010 Evergreen Award. Sponsored by GSA's Integrated Workplace Acquisition Center, the Evergreen Award recognizes partner companies that are providing leadership in recycling, waste reduction, and procurement. Shaw previously received the Evergreen Award in 2005.

GSA selected Shaw for its comprehensive leadership within the flooring category and its bold commitment to invest in waste reduction strategies, both in manufacturing and in product design. Specifically, GSA cited several initiatives that distinguished Shaw above other award applicants in 2010, including:

  • The production and delivery of the one-billionth square foot of EcoWorx®, Shaw's recyclable, PVC-free carpet tile backing that the company will also recycle at no charge;
  • The recycling of over 250 million pounds of post consumer carpet since 2007, saving 150,000 barrels of oil in the process;
  • The prevention of over 400 million pounds of carpet from entering landfills through Shaw's extensive reclamation program.

"The GSA's commitment to green building and LEED® Certified facilities is radically changing the commercial building industry," said Paul Murray, vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs. "As the federal government takes the lead, setting the procurement bar very high for sustainable products, Shaw is pleased to be considered a company that mirrors GSA's high standard. Our commitment to innovation in product development and waste reduction will keep Shaw at the forefront of the selection process when it comes to the flooring decisions of government agencies."

Shaw won in the Furnishings and Floor Coverings category. Winners in the other categories were Steelcase Inc., SimplexGrinnell and Play Mart Inc. "These companies have done an outstanding job of making environmentally friendly options available to our federal customers and are committed to helping us reduce waste and save taxpayer dollars," said Regional Administrator David H. Ehrenwerth. "We are honored to partner with companies that help us to green the government's supply chain while creating a more sustainable environment and building a greener future."

Shaw services the GSA schedule through its Shaw Contract Group and Patcaft flooring brands.
